HOW TO ‘KILL IT’ AT A NETWORKING EVENT

We have been discussing this week the importance of networking for successful and continued business growth so what about how to maximize the value you get from your time spent networking. Here are some top tips…

STAY OFF YOUR PHONE!

It’s amazing how many people you see at networking events on their phones or laptop. It instantly gives the message that they are not interested in interacting with the attendees. Unless you are sharing your contact info with another attendee keep your phone and tech devices away, your social media updates and emails will be waiting for you after this brief time for networking is over, so make the most of it and talk to people!

ASK QUESTIONS

This is the key to networking, striking up conversations but don’t fall in to the trap of talking about yourself, ask other people questions in order to really make a connection with them. Some of the best ice breaker questions include:

  • What do you think of the event and how did you hear about it?
  • Where are you from and how do you like it here?
  • What do you do and how did you decide to do what you do?
  • How can I be of help to you?
  • What resources do you find really helpful to you in your business and for advice?

MAKE YOURSELF MEMORABLE

You will usually meet many people at networking events and it’s unlikely you will remember them all. When you are networking and conversing with a new person or a group of people, make sure you make an impact whether its through sharing a compelling story or explaining an interesting case of work you were involved in. They will be able to link your face or name with the moment you shared.

FOLLOW UP

With all the new business cards you have make sure you send all your new connections a message to say it was great to meet them. Perhaps suggest a one to one meeting to learn more about each other’s businesses and challenges and this will help reinforce the connections and opportunities to access different networks and attend more events.
